What the Records Show

John Gardner and his brother Richard, "sons of Thomas," lived at Salem before they came to Nantucket. [1] Richard went first; John was granted land on the island in 1672 to follow his trade, and came about 1672 or 1673. [1] [2] He married Priscilla Grafton, and he died in 1706, "82 years old," leaving a widow and twelve children. [1]

Called Captain Gardner, he became the leading figure of the half-share men who opposed the original purchasers; Starbuck calls the opposition "the Gardner faction." [2] He sat on the Court of Admiralty that fined Tristram Coffin in August 1680, and he joined in the composition that reduced the fine that November. [3] [4] After Tristram's death he wrote to New York of "Mr. Cofens death who died October last." [5]
