John's 2nd cousin, 9 times removed. They share William Swift II, John's 10th great-grandfather.
b. 14 Oct 1733 · d. 12 Nov 1814
2nd cousin, 9 times removed of John, Perry and Patrick Long. A cousin line, not a direct ancestor.
Heman Swift is not a direct ancestor. He belongs to a cousin line: his family and John’s descend from the same man, William Swift II (b. 1627), and then run down through different sons. The two lines meet 12 generations back from John, Perry and Patrick Long, at their 10th great-grandfather. That makes Heman Swift their 2nd cousin, 9 times removed.

Heman Swift was born at Sandwich, Massachusetts, on 14 October 1733, the second son of Jabez Swift and Abigail Pope. [1] In 1743 the family moved to Kent, in Litchfield County, Connecticut, where his father died in 1767. The Swift genealogy says Heman married four times. [1]
In the Revolutionary War he was colonel of a Connecticut State regiment from July to December 1776, and colonel of the 7th Connecticut Regiment of the Continental Army from 1 January 1777. On 1 January 1781 he transferred to the 2nd Connecticut, and in June 1783 he was kept on as colonel of the consolidated Connecticut regiment. He was made a brevet brigadier general on 30 September 1783 and served to December 1783. [2]
He died at Cornwall, Litchfield County, Connecticut, on 12 November 1814, and is buried there. [3] [4]
