Susan D. (Pease) Eldredge Winter

b. about 1839 · d. after 1913

Second wife of Richmond C. Winter (married 1876), and probably the “Granni Winter” of Rachel Winter Swift’s photo labels. Not an ancestor: she was Rachel Winter Swift’s step-grandmother.

What the Records Show

Susan D. (Pease) Eldredge married Richmond C. Winter in 1876, the second marriage for him; the record gives their ages as 37 and 36, and the town record places the marriage at Fairhaven. [1] [2] His first wife, Elizabeth Arden, had died in 1873. In 1900 Richmond and Susan lived at 191 Washington Street, New Bedford, married 23 years, and the family of his daughter Fannie and her husband, Leroy W. Swift, with their children Rachel and LeRoy Jr., lived in the same dwelling. [3] In 1910 she and Richmond were still in New Bedford. [4] He died in 1912, and by 1913 she had moved to Fall River as his widow. [5]

She is probably the "Granni Winter" of Rachel Winter Swift's labels: the Dartmouth Street photograph, taken after Fannie's marriage in 1894 and before Richmond's death in 1912, shows "Granni Winter" with Papa, Mama and Grandpa Winter, years after Elizabeth Arden's death. [6] [3]
