Notable Cousin · via the maternal line
1755–1840 · Continental Army officer and Original Member of the Rhode Island Society of the Cincinnati; of Warwick, Rhode Island. A cousin in the same Westcott-rooted Arnold line as the more infamous Benedict Arnold V.
Relationship
Capt. Lt. Joseph Arnold is the 4th cousin, 7 times removed of John, Perry, and Patrick Long.
Through Stukely Westcott (1592–1677), founder of Providence. Joseph Arnold descends from Stukely’s daughter Damaris Westcott and the colonial Arnold line of Gov. Benedict Arnold I; the family descends from Stukely’s son Jeremiah Westcott. The same Westcott-Arnold branch produced Benedict Arnold V — Joseph is a cousin in that line, on the patriot side.
Stukely Westcott (1592–1677) — founder of Providence and Warwick; the shared ancestor (canonical PID 9HZW-SXJ — Joseph’s FS tree carries an unmerged duplicate, PQ52-FJV; do not merge). This is the single shared ancestor that connects Capt. Lt. Joseph Arnold to John, Perry, and Patrick. FamilySearch PID: 9HZW-SXJ.
Both lines descending from the most recent common ancestor, Stukely Westcott. The family’s line is the maternal Plantagenet descent documented in full on the Plantagenet Descent page; Research-in-Progress markers flag generations not yet enumerated. Click any PID to open the FamilySearch record.
VERIFIED on the shared anchor Stukely Westcott (canonical 9HZW-SXJ) and on the family’s own Jeremiah-Westcott line through to the Perrys, all enumerated on the Plantagenet Descent page. Joseph Arnold’s own record (PQ5L-59M) is verified. The Arnold-side intermediate generations between Damaris Westcott / Gov. Benedict Arnold I and Joseph are documented in the FamilySearch walk but not enumerated here, with no PIDs invented. The “4th cousin, 7 times removed” figure is carried at ±1 removal pending a downstream generation-gap cleanup on Joseph’s FamilySearch tree (an 81-year Dr. Caleb 1644 → Caleb 1725 gap that sits on his side, not the family’s).
