The Campaign

The Saratoga Campaign was the turning point of the American Revolution. British General John Burgoyne marched south from Canada with the goal of splitting the colonies along the Hudson River. The American forces, under General Horatio Gates, engaged Burgoyne in two battles near Saratoga, New York.

Colonel Joseph Vose’s 1st Massachusetts Regiment was part of Glover’s 2nd Massachusetts Brigade, which held the American right flank. The American victory forced Burgoyne’s surrender on October 17, 1777 — convincing France to enter the war as an American ally.
